Understanding PLU Degree Requirements

What is required to graduate with my Bachelor's degree from PLU?

  1. Entrance Requirements
  2. General University Requirements (GURs)
  3. Core 1 or Core 2 Requirements
  4. Requirements within chosen major

GENERAL UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS

The following GURs are required of all students earning baccalaureate degrees from PLU.  Except where noted (*), no course may be used to meet more than one GUR.

  • MATHEMATICAL REASONING [MATH, MR]  (4 hours) - in addition to most  classes within the Mathematics Department, this can also be satisfied by CSCE 115, STAT 231, or the equivalent of four years of college-preparatory mathematics with at least a B average.
  • SCIENCE AND SCIENTIFIC METHOD [SCSM, SM] (4 hours) - Courses containing a lab component satisfy this requirement.   Examples include classes within  the following departments: Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences and Physics .
  • WRITING) [WRIT, WR] (4 hours) - First-year students take this course as a part of their first-year experience.
  • * ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVES (4 hours)
  • * CROSS-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES (4 hours)
  • PHYSICAL EDUCATION (4 hours)
  • SENIOR SEMINAR (2-4 hours)

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

MATHEMATICS: 2 years of college prep math or equivalent

FOREIGN LANGUAGE: 2 years high school or 1 year college

Deficiencies in these requirements must be made up as soon as possible after entering PLU.
