Araya Finishes Third in 400 Hurdles at National Meet

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Pacific Lutheran junior Faven Araya finished third in the women’s 400-meter hurdles on the final day of the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Araya clocked 1:01.21 in the final, which was won by Calvin College (Mich.) senior Sarah Wittingen in a time of 59.39. Sumer Rohrs, a sophomore from Frostburg State (Maryland), placed second in a time of 1:00.71.

Running in the prelimary race on Thursday, Araya established a personal best 1:01.09, a mark that moved her into second on the PLU Top 25 in the event behind the 59.79 recorded by Karen Steen in 1986.

By placing third in her event, Araya was named a 2008 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III All-American. The top eight finishers in each event earn All-America honors. The last PLU track All-American came in 2005 when now assistant coach Dan Haakenson placed seventh in the men's hammer throw. The last PLU woman to earn All-American status was Carrie Larson in 2004 when she finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles.

Araya was one of only three Northwest Conference female athletes to earn All-America honors at this year’s national meet. The two other NWC All-Americans both hail for Willamette. The Bearcat's Jordyn Smith placed fourth in the 800-meter run and Brooke Smith placed seventh in the heptathlon.

Wisconsin-River Falls and Illinois Wesleyan tied for the team title with 35 points, followed by Wartburg (Iowa) with 34. Araya's third-place finish accounted for PLU's six points, good for a tie for 44th place.
