Lutes Pull Out Tough Win as They Remain
Undefeated in Northwest Conference

TACOMA – Pacific Lutheran's volleyball team continued its
winning streak in the Northwest Conference as it defeated the
Missionaries of Whitman College, 30-22, 30-27, 21-30, 23-30, 15-12,
on Friday evening in Olson Auditorium.
With the win, the Lutes improve their record 11-4 overall and
5-0 in the NWC. The Missionaries now stand 7-6 overall and 3-2
in the NWC with the loss.
The Lutes won the first two games. Junior Stacie Matz led the
team with 11 kills and senior Kati McGinn was not far behind contributing
nine kills. Junior Leslie Compean and sophomore Rosa Brey, with
nine kills apiece, led the Missionaries.
The Missionaries rallied together and won the next two games
to force the deciding fifth game.
The intensity grew in the fifth game as it began with the two
teams trading points. The Missionaries struck first. The Lutes
began to pull ahead with a kill by McGinn, assisted by junior
Gina Di Maggio, leaving the score 6-5. Whitman would not give
up as they brought the score to a tie at 9-9 with a service ace
from sophomore Kristan Brown. The two teams continued to exchange
points, but a kill by freshman Kelcy Joynt assisted by Di Maggio
sealed the deal, handing the Lutes their sixth straight win.
The Lutes continue their Northwest Conference action Saturday,
hosting the Pirates of Whitworth College. The match is set to
begin at 5 p.m.
