Lutes Pull Out Tough Win as They Remain Undefeated in Northwest Conference

Match Statistics

TACOMA – Pacific Lutheran's volleyball team continued its winning streak in the Northwest Conference as it defeated the Missionaries of Whitman College, 30-22, 30-27, 21-30, 23-30, 15-12, on Friday evening in Olson Auditorium.

With the win, the Lutes improve their record 11-4 overall and 5-0 in the NWC. The Missionaries now stand 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the NWC with the loss.

The Lutes won the first two games. Junior Stacie Matz led the team with 11 kills and senior Kati McGinn was not far behind contributing nine kills. Junior Leslie Compean and sophomore Rosa Brey, with nine kills apiece, led the Missionaries.

The Missionaries rallied together and won the next two games to force the deciding fifth game.

The intensity grew in the fifth game as it began with the two teams trading points. The Missionaries struck first. The Lutes began to pull ahead with a kill by McGinn, assisted by junior Gina Di Maggio, leaving the score 6-5. Whitman would not give up as they brought the score to a tie at 9-9 with a service ace from sophomore Kristan Brown. The two teams continued to exchange points, but a kill by freshman Kelcy Joynt assisted by Di Maggio sealed the deal, handing the Lutes their sixth straight win.

The Lutes continue their Northwest Conference action Saturday, hosting the Pirates of Whitworth College. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
