FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Pacific Lutheran picked up a pair
of three-game victories on Sunday to finish its season-opening
tournament with three wins in four matches.
After splitting Saturday's matches, the No. 22-ranked Lutes beat
Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 30-14, 30-24, 30-26 on Sunday morning.
In the afternoon session, PLU swept past winless Baruch (N.Y.),
30-10, 30-15, 30-10.
Pacific Lutheran dealt Wisconsin-Stevens Point its first loss
of the tournament with a three-game sweep of the Pointers. The
Lutes came out strong and dominated the first game with a .520
attack percentage. The Pointers held tough, however, and took
leads in both games two and three, but still fell to the Lutes.
Freshman outside hitter Beth Hanna led Pacific Lutheran with 15
kills and sophomore middle blocker Kelcy Joynt added 14.
The Lutes had little problem with Baruch, dispatching the New
York team in three games. PLU continued their strong hitting performances,
compiling a .245 attack percentage for the match and .345 in game
two alone. The Lutes also finished with 12 service aces, including
four by sophomore defensive specialist Brenna Archibald. Sophomore
outside hitter Abby Mitchel led PLU with 13 kills.
The Lutes are back on the road this coming weekend as they play
in the River City Classic hosted by Trinity University in San
Antonio, Tex.
