Nov. 8, 2007 Di Maggio, Hanna Named AVCA All-West Region First Team Hanna Selected as Region Freshman of the Year Senior setter Gina Di Maggio (Tumwater, Wash. / Tumwater HS) and freshman outside hitter Beth Hanna (Clackamas, Ore. / Clackamas HS), two of the key cogs in Pacific Lutheran's record-setting volleyball season, have earned American Volleyball Coaches Association All-West Region First Team honors. Hanna received a further honor when coaches selected her as West Region Freshman Player of the Year. In addition, Pacific Lutheran head coach Kevin Aoki was named West Region Coach of the Year, matching the award he won in 2004. Di Maggio, named to the region first team squad for the third time (she also was selected in 2004 and 2006), is averaging 12.02 assists per game and is on pace to break the school record of 11.56 assists per game she averaged as a freshman in 2004. Hanna, who earlier earned Northwest Conference Player of the Year honors, is on pace to eclipse two school hitting records. She currently averages 5.36 kills per game, well ahead of the record of 5.01 kills per game set by Rachelle Snowdon in 1995. With 472 kills, she needs just 15 more kills to surpass the record of 486 set by Snowdon in 1993. Di Maggio, Hanna and their teammates play in the NCAA Division III West Region Championships scheduled for Nov. 8-10 at Cal State-East Bay in Hayward, Calif. The Lutes (23-3 overall, 19-match win streak) received the No. 1 seed and with it a first-round bye. They open their tournament action at 4:30 p.m. Friday, and if they win they play for the region championship at 7 p.m. Saturday.
