Pacific Lutheran, Augsburg Tie 1-1 in
Women’s Soccer

PARKLAND, Wash. – Pacific Lutheran University and Augsburg
College battled through two overtimes before finishing with a
1-1 draw in a non-conference women’s soccer match played
Friday afternoon at the PLU soccer field.
After a scoreless first half, the Lutes (0-2-1) took a 1-0 lead
at 62:30 when freshman Cheryl Burris scored her first collegiate
goal, heading a long pass from Courtney Walker over the head of
Augsburg goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot.
The Auggies (1-1-1) got the tying score at 80:47 when Kristi
Castelic slotted a penalty kick to the lower right part of the
goal following a hand ball in the penalty area. Castelic got the
opportunity when Kelsey Watsabaugh’s corner kick sailed
over the head of PLU keeper Amanda Tschauner, forcing Lute defender
Monica Beard to use her hand to prevent the ball from going into
the net. Beard received a red card, and Castelic following with
the tying goal.
Both teams managed two shots during the 20 minutes of overtime,
but neither could score the deciding goal.
The match was close throughout as the host Lutes managed 12 shots,
one more than the visiting Auggies. Augsburg enjoyed a 5-2 corner
kick advantage, and both goalkeepers finished with six saves.
Pacific Lutheran returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday when it
hosts Cal Lutheran in another non-conference match.
