Whitman Women Edge PLU, 1-0, in NWC Soccer
Box Score
WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Kristen Berndt booted her 42nd career goal
and Whitman College blanked its fourth consecutive soccer opponent
in a 1-0 Northwest Conference victory over Pacific Lutheran Saturday
afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Solidifying its hold on third place in the conference, Whitman
ran its NWC record to 8-3-2. PLU, now 3-9-1 in the NWC, heads
to Spokane for a game against Whitworth at noon Sunday.
Berndt did the game's only scoring in the 25th minute, running
onto a lob pass from Molly Gordon on the left side of the goal
before knocking the ball to the far corner of the net. Berndt,
a senior, now has 11 goals on the season, all but one of which
has come in conference play.
Whitman, winning its six straight game, outshot the Lutes 14-11,
but the visitors were denied a single shot on goal. Courtney Porter,
a sophomore, pushed her NWC-leading shutout total to eight.
PLU's best scoring opportunity came with about 33 minutes left
in a still-scoreless first half. A streaking and lunging Christina
McDuffie just missed getting her head on a well-placed crossing
pass in front of the Whitman goal. McDuffie and teammates Meredith
Newby and Bre Greenman took two shots each for the Lutes.
