Juanita Reed Joins the School of Business Family

Juanita ReedThe PLU School of Business welcomes Juanita Reed, the new coordinator of undergraduate programs.  Reed graduated from UCLA and began her career as an adviser there.  She worked with the UCLA orientation program as an adviser and later, program coordinator. 

In 1997 Reed relocated to Washington from Los Angeles to marry her husband Josh.  Upon moving to Washington, Reed started working as the assistant director of career services for ITT Technical Institute in Tukwila.  Reed then moved to the University of Washington, Seattle in 2000 where she was an admission counselor responsible for all transfer admission programs.  After two years in Seattle, Reed moved to the UW Tacoma campus to be closer to home.  At UW Tacoma Reed was an admission adviser out-placed weekly at Tacoma Community College and both Pierce College campuses. 

Reed completed her Master of Education at the University of Washington, Seattle in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in 2002.

FEI Award Winner Announced

Finalists in Pacific Lutheran University’s 13th Annual Family Enterprise Institute “Best in the Northwest” Family Business Awards gathered on November 17th at the Marriott Hotel Sea-Tac for the awards ceremony.

Latvia Honors PLU Business Dean Emeritus


Gundar King, dean emeritus of the PLU School of Business, has been recognized by Latvia for outstanding civil merit.

Harmon Receives Award for Paper on Textbooks

School of Business marketing professor Susan Harmon presented her paper entitled, "Buying Textbooks:  The Choices Students Face, The Choices They Make" at the Society for Marketing Advances Conference this past October.  Harmon co-authored this paper with Don Roy, associate professor of marketing at Middle Tennessee State University.  They received the Southwestern Lamb/Hair/McDaniel Award for the Best Paper in the Marketing Education Track.

PLU Alum Named Finalist for CFO of the Year Award


Brenda Morris, PLU alum and current member of the School of Business Executive Advisory Board, was named a finalist in the Puget Sound Business Journal’s CFO of the Year Event.  Brenda serves as the CFO of Zumiez, Inc., a specialty teen retailer with 140 stores nationwide.  Congratulations to Brenda for all of her accomplishments! 

Zabriskie honored with Faculty Excellence Award


School of Business professor Fern Zabriskie received the Faculty Excellence Award in Advising at the December 2006 commencement.  The criteria state: “This award recognizes a faculty advisor who embodies the qualities of effective and caring concern for student academic progress, as measured by skill at helping students plan their academic schedule, navigate the challenges of college life, and make well-chosen life and career decisions."


PLU School of Business Faculty Publications

Catherine Pratt has received notice that her paper entitled, “Leadership Theory and Practice: Integrating the Leader Exemplar, Theory, Assessment, and Reflection” has been accepted for publication in the Mountain Plains issue of the Journal of Business Inquiry.  Pratt has also been notified that another paper entitled, "Learning leadership across generations in family owned enterprises" has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Business and Leadership.

Diane MacDonald, has been notified that her paper, “Collecting Personal Information Online: Best Privacy Policy Practices” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Digital Business.  Her article will appear in the December 2006 issue.

Gerry Myers recently received notification that his paper entitled, “The Whistle Stop Ale House: To Buy or Not to Buy” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Accounting Case Research.  His article will be included in an issue to be released in early 2007. 

Quoc Pham was recently notified that his paper entitled, "A Global Perspective of Outsourcing and Disparity in Living Standards" was accepted for presentation at the NASBITE International conference to be held in Vancouver April 2-3, 2007.

Glenn VanWyhe recently received notification that his paper entitled, "A History of U.S. Higher Education in Accounting, Part I: Situating Accounting within the Academy" will be published in the May 2007 issue (vol. 22, no.2) of Issues in Accounting Education.

The article entitled "Economic Development: Corruption, Complexity, Wealth, and a Triad of Strains," co-authored by Bruce Finnie, Linda Gibson and Dave McNabb has been published in the refereed international journal Humanomics Vol. 22 No. 4, 2006.  Another paper also co-authored by Finnie, Gibson and McNabb entitled, “Managing Innovation in the Public Sector: What Happens When Good Intentions Aren’t Enough?” was accepted for presentation at the upcoming Oxford Business and Economics Conference to be held in Oxford, England in June.

Jim Albers and MBA student Bill Whitmore received notice of the publication of their paper entitled, “Knowledge Management In An Accounting Organization” in the Journal of Knowledge Management Practice.  To read this article, please visit http://www.tlainc.com/articl123.htm.

Dave McNabb will be presenting a co-authored paper with MBA alum Katsushiro Nakagawa entitled, “Developing Entrepreneurs the "Japanese Way": A Government, Education and Industry Partnership.”

Fern Zabriskie and Dave McNabb co-authored a paper entitled, "e-Hancing the MBA Managerial Accounting Course" which has been accepted for publication.  Look for the paper in the Journal of Education for Business in March/April.

Eli Berniker and Dave McNabb recently received notification that their paper entitled, “Dialectical Inquiry: A Structured Qualitative Research Method” has been published by The Qualitative Report.
