Foot Care Skills for Nurses

This
one-day program offers nurses the opportunity to develop foot assessment skills
and learn basic to intermediate foot care techniques. Nurses can provide foot care that reduces the complications
associated with arthritis, structural deformities, diabetes and vascular
disease. This program will focus on
practice standards & guidelines, common foot & ankle problems,
equipment & supplies, assessment & documentation and foot care procedures
Objectives:

Describe the anatomical structure of the foot, nail and lower extremities
- Perform basic physical assessment of the lower extremities, foot, and nail
- Recognize common medical conditions of the foot & nail
- Recommend conservative treatment for common foot & nail problems
- Differentiate between foot & nail
conditions that can be managed conservatively and those that require
referral to a specialist
- Recognize common neurological & vascular conditions of the lower extremities
- Explain how diabetic patients are at increased risk for serious foot & nail problems
- Recommend proper shoe & shocks for common lower extremity & foot problems
- Teach basic foot care procedures to adult geriatric and diabetic patients
- Describe use of basic foot care tools & cleaning/disinfectant/sterilization procedures
