Alternative Spring Break Trips

Alternative Spring Break Trips

It has been 2 ½ years since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and there is still much to be done. Campus Ministry will be going to the areas of devastation to help with the work that still needs to be done. The trip is focused on helping individuals and communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

15 students and 3 staff will be leaving PLU to travel to New Orleans, Louisiana to do continued disaster relief work.  While they are away, they will be posting a web-journal detailing their adventures and work.

God's Anatomy

Gray's Wholebody

Wheelbarrows, hammers, and saws, oh my!

Fourteen Lutes (13 students and 1 staff member) ventured to Spokane, WA to partner with other colleges in building homes with the Habitat for Humanity.    Habitat1
Working with other college spring breakers and the family who was to receive the house, the work team installed radiant floor heating, dug trenches, caulked, touched up paint, and successfully finished building a wall. The group shared the parish house of a local church, cramming the entire group in with only one bathroom -- and build community they did! Learn more about Habitat for Humanity.

Campus Ministry makes a run for the border!

Six students and two staff members participated in "La Immersion de la Frontera," or, Border Immersion  Experience in El Paso, TX and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

The focus of the trip was social justice - the group spent their time hearing the stories of men and women on both sides of the border as well as from different organizations working to promote the rights and safety of undocumented immigrants in the United States. They visited a women’s center, an emergency homeless shelter, and met with Dra. Mendoza, a doctor in Juarez who provides free health care to anyone who walks in the clinic doors.
