University Computer Lab Policy

Welcome to our computer lab. To assist you in your coursework and to assure consistency in computer labs and classrooms across campus, the following standards have been adopted. These general computer lab standards apply to all PLU student computer facilities. Please refer to posted special instructions or policies in each individual lab.

  1. Admittance to the lab/classroom is made by one of the following methods:

    • Current validated PLU ID card presented to the consultant on duty.
    • Faculty must be present when the room is in use. (Rooms with this type of admittance must be kept locked at all other times)
    • Student's name must be on a pre-approved list from the department managing the lab/classroom.
  2. No food or drink is permitted in the room.
  3. Absolutely no copyrighted software may be copied or taken from the room.
  4. Absolutely no outside software may be copied onto the hard disk of any computer in the room.
  5. Working documents must be saved on floppy disks or individual accounts, if provided--not the computer's hard disk. (Files left on the hard disk will be deleted. 3.5" floppy disks can be purchased in the bookstore.)
  6. Computer electronics are sensitive to rapid changes in temperature. The thermostat must be left on automatic at all times.
  7. Be considerate of others:
    • Change NO control panel setting without permission.
    • Do not delete, create, or move any files on the hard disk without permission.
    • When using files others will use later, leave them exactly as you found them. Save any changes on a floppy.
    • When talking with other people, avoid distracting other students from their work.
    • Use our resources wisely: use print preview to review your documents \ whenever possible and limit printing to one copy only.

It is the policy of Pacific Lutheran University to respect the copyright protections given by law to software owners. It is against University policy for faculty, staff, or students to copy or reproduce any licensed software on University-owned computer equipment, except as expressly permitted by software license. In addition, faculty, staff, and students may not use unauthorized copies of software on University-owned computers or computers housed in University facilities.

Storage of files on lab hard drives

Computing and Telecommunication Services holds no responsibility for personal files saved on the hard disks. Please save your work onto floppy disks! The hard disks are cleaned off periodically. Software packages installed on the hard disks are licensed to Computing and Telecommunication Services. Software owned by the individual may not be left on the hard disks.

Use of the Classrooms
The classrooms are used for classroom instruction by various departments. There are some exceptions:

  1. The Education and IBM classrooms may be used during non-class times by students enrolled in a class being taught in that particular classroom. Students wishing to use the classrooms MUST first check in with the consultant on duty.
  2. If the open lab is filled to capacity, a classroom may be used if classes are not scheduled to be taught in the room. This decision will be made at the discretion of the consultant on duty.

Take care to protect your personal belongings. We are not responsible for loss or theft.

Safety in the Lab

For safety reasons children under the age of 12 are not allowed in the lab. Children 12 and older must be accompanied by a PLU student, faculty, or staff member.

In case of emergency evacuation , consultants will direct all lab users out of the lab in a timely fashion

OFFENSIVE MATERIAL IN SHARED SPACES

Since it is nearly impossible to avoid seeing images displayed on other users' computing screens, or hearing sounds played, the printing, display or playing of sexually explicit or potentially offensive materials in this space may create a hostile working or learning environment which violates University policies.

A complaint procedure is available to anyone who has been offended by the printing, display or playing of certain types of images, text, or sounds in a shared space on university premises. Anyone wishing to file a complaint may contact one of the University grievance officers: Rick Seeger, ext. 8786; Pat Roundy, ext. 8786; Merlin Simpson ext. 8779; Kathleen Farrell, ext. 7195; Kathy Russell, ext. 7643; or Susan Mann, ext. 7187.

Violations of any of these policies are subject to referral to student conduct which may result in withdrawal of computer privileges.
