Brief Biography
Dr. Jan Lewis is Professor of Education in
PLU’s School of Education. A faculty member for fifteen years,
her focus area is literacy education. Her forthcoming book
(co-authored with Dr. Jane Braunger of WestEd), Building a Knowledge
Base in Reading, 2e, is a synthesis of current research on best
practice in literacy instruction grades K-12. In addition to
presentations of this work at the International Reading Association and
National Council of Teachers of English conferences, she has worked
with colleagues on assessment in teacher education (with Dr. Jan Weiss)
and integrated teacher education/literacy approaches (with Dr. Paula
Leitz) at the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education,
the American Educational Research Association, and CEC/TED.
Dr. Lewis teaches primarily in School of Education graduate courses,
including both Project LeaD and Project Impact. During the Fall
semester, she works primarily with the Impact students to implement a
reading tutoring project in 16 elementary schools in the Puyallup
School District; during the summer, she works with LeaD students on
research methods.
