Brief Biography
Kent has been a member of the Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) faculty
since 1980. He has achieved national recognition for his research,
writing, and other work on issues involving the employment,
supervision, and training of paraeducators. Dr. Gerlach has authored
several texts, training materials, and journal articles. His most
current publications include Supervising Paraeducators in Educational
Settings: A Team Approach published by Pro*ed Publishers, Austin, TX;
Paraeducators in School Settings (in press), Pro*ed Publishers, Austin,
TX; and “Let’s Team Up”: A Checklist for Paraeducators, Teachers, and
Principals published by the National Education Association.
At PLU, he
currently teaches courses on Child Abuse and Neglect, introduction to
special education, and serves on the graduate education faculty
(Project LEAD). In 1997 Dr. Gerlach received the PLU Faculty
Achievement Award and the PLU Teaching Excellence Award.
In addition to
serving on several boards, Dr. Gerlach has presented at numerous
conferences, served as a consultant to several state and local
agencies, and has conducted staff development workshops in forty
states, Australia, and Canada.
