Welcome to the English Department at Pacific Lutheran University. We offer majors and minors with an emphasis in either Literature or Writing, a minor in Publishing and Printing Arts, and a concentration in Children's Literature. The English major offers excellent preparation for any future requiring integrative thinking, skill in writing, discernment in reading, or aesthetic appreciation. Our distinguished faculty bring a range of experiences and talents to the classroom.

The English major or minor with an emphasis in Literature introduces students to the great literary traditions of the English-speaking world. The English major or minor with a Writing emphasis is designed to appeal to a broad range of students, from those who wish to focus on creative writing to those interested in exploring theoretical issues in rhetoric and composition. All English majors complete at least two years of university-level foreign language study.

The PLU English Department offers two innovative programs. The minor in Publishing and Printing Arts enables students to combine the solid foundation of a liberal arts education with pre-professional skills and experience in the world of publishing. Students who complete a special set of English courses with an emphasis in children's literature can earn a special diploma endorsement in Children’s Literature.

All of our English undergraduate programs help students become more discerning readers; develop skills in integrative thinking, writing, and critical and creative expression; and cultivate a life-long appreciation of aesthetic values and the diversity of human experience.

The PLU English Department also supports an MFA in Creative Writing. The Rainier Writing Workshop, launched in Summer 2004, is the Pacific Northwest's first low-residency program in creative writing.  Taught by nationally known writers and editors, the Rainier Writing Workshop involves a three-year course of study, incorporating intensive ten-day Summer Residencies with customized writing programs under the guidance of a mentor. The Jack Cady Promise Scholarship Fund has been established to support students in the MFA program.
