The English major or minor with an
emphasis in Writing offers students intensive practice in imaginative,
analytical, and pragmatic modes of writing. Students learn to shape
their words for particular audiences and settings, as well as to expand
their own creative, stylistic, and interpretive resources. Students
develop writing skills in several genres, read a variety of texts
extensively and carefully, and reflect on theoretical and practical
issues raised in the writing process.

By completing an English major with a Writing emphasis, undergraduates learn to adapt their thinking, inquiry, and writing skills to a range of creative, civic, and professional settings. After graduation, some produce and publish imaginative, informational, or critical writing as freelance writers. Some move into writing positions in science, law, business, or industry. Others find themselves well prepared to pursue advanced degrees in writing or English literary studies.
