University Printing mandates 30% post-consumer paper
Over
two years ago, GREAN, the environmental group on campus began the Smart
Paper Campaign. Our goal was to change the paper policy on the Pacific
Lutheran University campus so all departments would begin using post
consumer recycled paper. After a lot of hard work and dedication our
mission has been accomplished. Kathy Berry and Debbie Jenkins, from
Printing Services made the announcement that all departments on campus
will be using 30% post consumer 20# bond on campus. Each department
will receive this paper when placing an order, unless otherwise
requested. Printing Services vowed that they will continue to research
and test 50% post consumer recycled paper in an effort to move forward
to a higher content in the near future. The positive reinforcement from
students and faculty has helped Pacific Lutheran University on its way
to becoming a more sustainable campus. Using recycled paper in all
departments is an enormous step in the right direction!
What does "post-consumer" mean?
Post-consumer means paper that
people have actually USED, put in a RECYCLING BIN, and has been made
into a new product. If something says "Made from recycled material" but
does not specify "Post-consumer", it probably was never used to begin
with (i.e. "recycling" sawdust waste).
