Pacific Lutheran University is the first university in the Pacific Northwest to
be signatories of the Talloires Declaration! The declaration was written in
France in 1990 has has been signed by 300 colleges and universities, worldwide.
As a university in the Northwest, and as signatories of the declaration, we are
showing our concern for the environmental degradation that Earth is currently
experiencing. We also have the great opportunity of being leaders in the
environmental movement. Chuck Bergman first brought the idea of PLU signing the
declaration to GREAN and the Sustainability committee in March, 2004.
We
then brought the Talloires Declaration to President Anderson’s attention because
as a university, we are educating the future generations and have an obligation
to the environment. PLU is already well on its way to being an environmentally
sound university. Two years ago an active sustainability committee was formed to
work on environmental issues and sustainability on campus. The campus offers
more options for recycling than the city of Parkland, and just a month ago, with
the help of GREAN, the environmental group on campus, the campus paper policy
was changed to 30% post consumer content recycled paper campus-wide. The signing
of the Talloires Declaration formally echoes some of the changes that have
already taken place on campus, and reinforces the university’s mission.
