Welcome to Hinderlie's Online Home!
It's a new semester and a new year, and you know what that means: Madness, in March. I know — it's a little bit crazy. Actually, I think there might be something to do with basketball, but one would have to check in with Tim.
One of the cool things that we have happening this March is a contest. Did you hear that, Hinderlie? A contest, with the other halls around campus. This month, we need to do all we can to conserve power. To this end, I've compiled a list of some things you can do to help save power.
- Turn out the lights when you leave your room.
- And the Bathroom.
- Avoid the Black Death like the plague.
- Put your computer in “sleep” or ”standby” mode when you're not using it (you can accomplish this by going to the Apple menu and choosing “Sleep.” For Windows users, go to the Start menu, clicking “Shut Down,” then choosing “Suspend”). It's even easier for a laptop user — just shut the lid. Laptops themselves use a lot less power than a large desktop computer, too.
- Please ensure Grandmother is not hiding under your desk.
She does that sometimes, and while the pistachio gelatin is good, it
does not make up for the fact she is stealing squirrels and placing
them in your bed.
- Turn off the computer monitor when you're not using the computer. Same goes for the TV. Those bulky displays and Television-boxes use up a lot of power. Flat screens consume less than half as much power as the big displays do, and the picture is usually sharper.
- Don't let your off-campus friends siphon off your power with a VLEC (Very Long Extension Cord).
- Turn down your fridge. It doesn't need to be 0° inside — just enough to keep things chilled. (I did notice that the main floor kitchen got a newer, more-energy-efficient refrigerator).
- Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. They consume far less power, last more than five times as long, and are a lot cooler-to-the-touch (meaning a lot less power is waisted as heat).
Additionally, there are a few other important dates around campus, impacting our dining options and late-night fun. Mark these dates in your Palm Pilot and look out for up-dates and further information (and pseudo- quasi- and meta-informations)!
- The Cave closes 8 March
- Coffee shop, shortly thereafter
- The UC Closes after Spring Break (Spring break is the week of 24 March - 1 April) for renovation
After Spring Break, Dining Services will make some changes to accommodate all on-campus students. The Bistro will still be open during the renovation of the UC, but will close up as soon as the renovation is complete. The Columbia Centre (the building which houses the Bistro and the Golf Pro Shop) will house the main cafeteria on its second floor during the renovation. Interesting Fun Fact: before the UC was built, the Columbia Centre and Ingram were the cafeterias for lower and upper campus, respectively. Ingram was then turned into an organic labyrinthine serries of never-ending corridors, and the Columbia Centre was promptly forgotten.
