General Description
Maintains positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service. Supports the Managers and Supervisors in maintaining department and university quality standards, including supervising and motivating reporting staff and team members. Reports to the Culinary Operations Manager.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Effectively supervises and motivates Line Cooks and other kitchen/servery support staff.
- Reads menu to estimate food requirements and requisitions food or procures it from storage.
- Preparing, seasoning, and cooking soups, meats, vegetables, pasta, pizza, sandwiches, ethnic dishes, desserts, and other food stuff for consumption in high energy, fast paced university dining facility.
- Proper storage, rotation, and labeling of product. Responsible for condition of kitchen and equipment.
- Follow proper cleaning, maintenance and reporting procedures. Comply with all safety standards.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by a manager or supervisor.
- Dining Service’s team members are essential university personnel. In the event of PLU declaring emergency status essential university personnel must contact supervisor to obtain schedule.

- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with other university leadership, team members, and customers, including ability to follow instructions/procedures in English language.
- Ability to multitask and utilize effective time management during production.
- Ability to measure, cut, or otherwise work on materials or objects with great precision.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to understand Team Members’ needs.
- Ability to detect food and labor waste issues and develop a plan of corrective action.
- Ability to provide exemplary customer service constantly and consistently.
- Working knowledge of vegetarian and vegan cuisine.
- Operational knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment including, but not limited to, a demonstrated proficiency in the proper use of slicers, knives, box cutters, a dumpster, and all related equipment.
- Ability to work flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for up to 4 hours without a break.
- Ability to bend and stoop to grasp objects, climb ladders, lift loads, up to 50 lbs. unassisted, push and pull carts weighing up to 100 lbs. unassisted.
- Ability to visually examine products for quality and signage/labeling for accuracy.
Work Conditions
- Will be exposed to hot, dry, cold, wet and/or humid conditions.
- Work with/around standard kitchen/dish room equipment that requires personal protective equipment.
- Summer schedules vary from the last week in May and until the last week in August. Scheduled hours may be reduced for 12 month employees to 24 to 30 hours per week or less during this time period. Employees are encouraged to utilize accrued vacation during this time period.
Required Qualifications
- 1 ½ years professional kitchen experience. Graduation from a professional culinary training program may substitute for some experience.
- Successful supervisory and management experience.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- High standard of personal hygiene.
- Must possess a Washington State Food Handler's permit. A valid driver’s license is preferred.
- Finalist candidates must successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and criminal background check. If applicable, pass PLU’s Driver’s Certification
Training and provide an original copy of Driving Record (5yr Employment
Abstract).
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of computer programs.
- Associate degree in culinary arts or bachelors’ degree in hospitality management or related field.
