Work Schedule
PT; Mon-Fri, normal hours are 7:00am-1:30pm. Hours may vary with campus needs. Nights, Weekends and Holidays may be required for various campus conferences and events, and move in and move out times when the refuse and campus recycling loads are at their heaviest in order to keep the PLU setting and standards to the degree demanded.
General Description
Perform and help with the development, implementation, management, and promotion of the recycling program. Coordinate tasks, work with student employees and other PLU staff and administrators. May be involved with environmental issues such as air and water quality and hazardous chemical management. Reports to the Environmental Sciences Coordinator.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Remove/help remove all refuse and recyclables from residence halls, administration buildings and grounds.
- Areas of work will include paper and other recycling in the Academic Buildings.
- Work with 6-12 student employees.
- Move furniture from office locations to surPLUs or recycle.
- Coordinate recycling efforts throughout campus by working with campus organizations, Pierce County Refuse and other community services.
- May help with the Grounds Department on handling, storage and recycling of grounds compost.
- Assist with surPLUs and surPLUs sales.
- Help with efforts to increase the recycling rate to 80%. Current rate is approximately 60%.
- Support the mission to Serve the Campus Community with Care and Respect While Promoting and Modeling Environmental Fiscal Conservation in all contact with students, faculty, and staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

- Able to interact and work with everyone in a diverse environment.
Working Conditions
- Will often come in contact with a variety of waste products, hazardous materials, chemicals, and biological waste.
- Environment is continuously dirty and may have severe odors. The noise level is moderate.
Physical Requirements
- Able to pick up and transport refuse throughout and around campus.
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted on a regular basis.
- May occasionally lift, roll or move more than 100 pounds with assistance.
- Good hearing and vision.
- Ability to climb, stoop, and bend for long periods of time.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Driver's License (Must have had a valid driver's license for at least 2 years).
- Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check, physical exam, pass PLU's Driver's Certification Training; and provide an original copy of their Driving Record (5 yr Employment Abstract).
