General Description
This new position will have responsibility for the administration and maintenance of the campus network under the direction and supervision of the Network Manager, a member of the Systems & Communications Team which includes server administration, networking, & telecommunications for the campus.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
The Network Engineer will
install, configure, and maintain the physical infrastructure and
various connected services of the PLU network. Specific tasks will
include the following:
- Purchase, installation, and configuration of network switches and routing devices.
- Configuration and update of firewalls (PIX, IPTables, etc).
- Maintain campus connections to the Internet.
- Configure, maintain & troubleshoot network core routing & switching.
- Trouble-shoot and problem solve with devices communicating on the campus network.
- Support the campus helpdesk by responding to questions about the network.
- Configure and monitor the network intrusion detection system.
- Configure and support the network access control and registration system.
- Ensure equipment is under appropriate maintenance contracts. Renew contracts, as needed.
- Create and maintain documentation on the network topology, data closets, and equipment inventory.
- Assist with networking and telecommunications infrastructure
installation projects - from design through construction and
implementation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency in the following is required:
- Standards-based networking technologies
- Routing protocols, including BGP, VRRP, RIP, and OSPF
- All aspects of TCP/IP
- Configuring network services such as DNS and DHCP
- SNMP
- Network monitoring and probing tools such as tcpdump, nmap, and Nessus
- Cabling standards and installation
- Interpersonal skills to assist in customer service and relationships with the campus community
- Planning, developing, and coordinating multiple projects
- Experience in the following is desirable:
- Enterasys hardware and software
- Unix systems administration
- Active Directory, LDAP, RADIUS
- Programming languages (shell script, PHP, Perl, Java)
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of two years of experience in network administration. Education experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related subject area. Equivalent job-related work experience/certification may substitute for degree.
- Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks.
