Dr. Martin E. Marty

An internationally recognized scholar of American religious history and ordained Lutheran minister, Dr. Martin E. Marty will discuss the rapid growth of Christianity in Asia, Latin America and Africa. He will explore the meaning of this growth for Christian communities in Europe and North America, especially its implications for Lutheranism.

About Dr. Martin E. Marty

martyMarty is the Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago, where he taught for 35 years. Upon his retirement in 1998, the Martin E. Marty Center was founded to promote "public religion" endeavors.

Marty is the author of over 50 books and 5,000 articles on the history of Christianity. His books include "Righteous Empire: The Protestant Experience in America," which earned the National Book Award, and the three-volume "Modern American Religion."

Marty is a contributing editor of The Christian Century, a biweekly magazine of American church life, news and commentary that links the Christian faith and contemporary life. He has served on the staff since 1956 and currently writes the "M.E.M.O."column. He is also the editor of Context, a bimonthly newsletter on religion and culture, and authors the Marty Center's weekly email column, "Sightings."
