This extended professional conversation engages staff from Blackwell’s
Book Services (Portland, Oregon), librarians, faculty, and staff from
the libraries of Puget Sound Academic Independent Libraries (PSAIL), and
a representative of The University of Washington Press. Through a
series of informal presentations and subsequent question-and-answer
session and discussion, we anticipate a wide-ranging and inter-related
exploration of the following major themes:
Changes in user behavior patterns and expectations of the printed book.
Technological influences, developments, and trends, and their impact
on the printed book world.
Acquisition, production, publishing, marketing, and distribution in the
contemporary printed book trade. Transition from print to digital and
the implications for both formats. New models of marketing and bookselling.
Technological influences, developments, and trends, and their impact on
the printed book world. New models of marketing and bookselling.
Current and near-future state of the academic library, its budgets, its
collection development practices, and its commitment to printed books.
The program will be webcast and available simultaneously to PSAIL
libraries’ staff who are unable to be present at PLU. The webcast will
be archived by PLU and can be accessed by interested parties in the
