So what is MAV?
Men Against
Violence at PLU is a program focused on creating an equitable campus
and community free of violence. As part of that mission, we focus on
promoting
relationships based on equality and respect rather than power and
control, encouraging positive,
healthy expressions of masculinity, and being visible outspoken allies
for all who experience prejudice and discrimination on our campus and
in our community. To learn more please see the What is MAV? page. Why are you part of the Women's Center anyway?
MAV is a natural fit within the Women's Center... the central goal of the Women's Center is to work toward gender equity, which is really what MAV is about as well. The reason we don't like it when other guys do or say degrading things to the women we care about is because we have mutual respect and care for each other. It is much easier for violence to be perpetrated against those who are not seen as equals, so if the minority of men who are violent with others could learn to see them as equals it would be much more difficult for them to abuse.
See the FAQ for more about men and the Women's Center.

I'm a good guy, why should I get involved?
This is a
common question, and a very good one. Why would someone want to devote their limited time to an issue that doesn't seem to be something men
have to deal with?
The answer starts with the women we love. Did
you know that based on the number of sexual assaults that are reported, 1 in 4 women will be assaulted in
their lifetime. Now consider that perhaps half of all assaults are reported.Think about the women in your life... you know and love
women who have been victimized by other men. Sisters, mothers, friends, partners, future children...
Make you angry too? Here are some things you can do.

Has one of your friends been assaulted? Please contact the advocate at the Women's Center, Jennifer Warwick at ext. 6303 for more information on how to help. Also see Supporting survivors under Being an Ally on the Resources page.
