Project Overview
The renovation and expansion of Eastvold will improve
facilities for the Division of Humanities, Performing Arts and Tower
Chapel.
Performing Arts The Eastvold renovation
will provide new and refurbished spaces for the performing arts,
including not only the current theatre stage but also a black
box/studio theatre, an arena for speaker's forums and outlying office
and classroom areas as a place for breakout sessions. Theatre faculty
will also be located in the same building as the stage, allowing them
to spend more time in their teaching arena and giving students better
access to their offices.
Tower Chapel The Eastvold
renovation will allow Tower Chapel to become an even greater spiritual
sanctuary by creating a brighter, more comfortable space for Campus
Ministry and religious clubs to meet and worship. A new grand entrance
will welcome the PLU community to celebrate and worship, and will allow
the chapel to be accessible to the PLU community 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. Additionally, the chapel will have a balcony to provide
overflow seating or space for a choir, as well as a narthex, sacristy,
and an alcove for the rehabilitated historic pipe organ. Finally, from
the new chapel floor you will be able to look up one story to the Rose
Window, which was adopted as the logo for Pacific Lutheran University
in 1975.
Planning and Construction Process
The Planning Committee for the Eastvold Chapel and Auditorium
renovation and expansion is headed by Vice President of Finance and
Operations Sheri Tonn, and is advised by President Anderson and the PLU Board of Regents.
Early on in the space planning
stage, focus groups will be organized and, along with other campus
groups, will help to inform the design process. The Eastvold Steering
Committee represents constituents from all over campus, especially
departments who will be significantly affected by the renovation. Please see below for Steering Committee minutes.
In
March 2002, the planning committee submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) for
design services to several architectural firms, and ultimately elected
to work with NBBJ. In Summer 2005, an RFP was also submitted to several
contractors, and the committee decided to hire Sellen Construction. The
design process is nearly complete, but the project has been temporarily put on hold.
