Project Overview
Since its inception in 1966, KPLU has built a rich heritage as a
pre-eminent broadcast asset in the Pacific Northwest. Offering NPR
news, jazz and blues, KPLU's signal reaches all of Western Washington,
Northern Oregon and Southern British Colombia, giving it a weekly
audience of over 350,000 listeners. Additionally, KPLU's 24-hour
jazz stream is heard on the Web by 20,000 listeners per week,
making it one of the most listened-to streams on the Internet.
Prior to the renovation of Eastvold, KPLU will be moving to a new building, the Martin J. Neeb Center,
near South Hall on lower campus, which will be designed specifically to support their broadcasting needs.
This new building will provide much-needed upgrades including on-air
studios, production rooms, small performance space, and offices.
Planning and Construction Process
The KPLU project is overseen by the KPLU Planning Committee, which
is overseen
by PLU's Construction Management Department. The project is also supervised by the KPLU
Steering Committee, which reports to President Anderson and the PLU
Board of Regents.
In
March 2005, the planning committee submitted a Request for Proposal
(RFP) for design services to several architectural firms, and
ultimately elected to work with Bloomfield and Associates and Helix
Design. In Spring 2006, the committee also decided to hire John Korsmo
Construction as contractor for the project. A
conceptual design for the building has been completed, and the
committees will soon finalize construction documents and county
permits. Construction is scheduled to begin January 2008.
The project is estimated to be completed by January 2009.
