The New University Center
The goal of the renovation was to make the UC more student-focused, and to update and improve the building to maximize its potential as a Campus Commons. It provided student-centered organizations the opportunity to unite under one roof in greatly improved office spaces, a conference room, and recreation areas. The renovation also provided new opportunities for Dining Services, including the addition of the Old Main Market, a convenience store, and a new Commons with an updated menu. The UC provides many PLU departments, such as Auxiliary Services and Dining Services, with new office spaces. The new UC includes automatic light controls, new sewer and water lines, wireless access, a new sprinkler system, and air conditioning in the Commons. In addition, the building is pending LEED Silver Sustainability Certification.
Previously, the main floor of the University Center housed the
primary university kitchen, student dining area, meeting rooms, the bookstore, and office space. The ground floor was home to the
Scandinavian Cultural Center, Campus Ministry, a computer lab,
classrooms, Lute Lounge, Commuter Lounge, ASPLU office, Outdoor
Recreation office, Impact office, Coffee Shop, and the Diversity
Center. The lower level contained the Cave. The third floor mezzanine
had offices for student media including the Mast, KCNS, K103 and
Saxifrage.
The
University Center renovation was overseen by the UC Planning Committee, led by Laura Majovski of Student Life and John Kaniss of
Construction Management. The committee was advised by Vice President of
Finance and Operations Sheri Tonn, President Anderson, and the PLU Board
of Regents. The UC Steering Committee represented constituents from all over campus, especially departments who were significantly
affected by the renovation. Please see below for Steering Committee Minutes.
Early on in the space planning stage, focus groups were organized
and, along with other campus groups, helped to inform the design
process. In June 2006,
the planning committee submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) for
design services to several architectural firms, and ultimately elected
to hire Mithūn. In July 2006, the committee submitted an RFP to several
contractors, and ultimately elected to work with Sellen Construction. The Board of Regents approved the final conceptual design in October 2006, and construction began in late March 2007, after the departments were relocated.
The project was completed in September 2007. Floorplans & Artistic Renderings
