I'm basically a Northwesterner, having grown up in Portland and later Tacoma. I graduated from PLU in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. My wife and I spent three years in Southern California while I attended graduate school at the University of Southern California, concentrating on the ecology of mesopelagic lanternfishes. My curriculum vitae describes details of my education, training, and professional experience. |
When I get a chance, I enjoy traveling. My favorite recreational trips include an eight day rafting trip down the Grand Canyon and a ferry trip to Southwestern Alaska, culminating in a flight over Glacier Bay. I've also traveled to places like Washington D.C, Chicago, San Fransciso, Salt Lake City, Nashville, and Los Angeles to make presentations at professional conferences. |

My scandinavian family ancestors were fisherman --
some of them were lost at sea. Strangely enough, I've spent nearly a
month at sea on various research vessels. As an undergraduate I had an
opportunity to take a nineteen day reasearch cruise in the North
Pacific with the University of Washington's R/V Thompson. In graduate
school I went on several three-day cruises around the southern
California Channel Islands collecting hydrographic data and mesopelagic
fishes. During my graduate work I spent seven months at the Catalina
Marine Science Center. The adjoining microphoto was taken during a
class on Ichthyoplankton. |
