Come to Family Weekend 2007 Kristi Dopp, Director, Garfield Book Company at PLU Karen Giguere, Gift Buyer/Merchandise Manager
One of the most exciting new features of Garfield Book Company at PLU (PLU’s new bookstore) is the Fair Trade and World Goods Store, located within the bookstore.
Before the Garfield Book Company opened its doors, PLU Bookstore staff operated PLU Northwest and Scandinavian Gift Shop on Garfield Street. Over the years, PLU Northwest developed a devoted local customer following because of its wide variety of Scandinavian gifts and imports. The store also stocked an array of Pacific Northwest souvenirs and gifts.
The Fair Trade and World Goods store still carries Scandinavian and Northwest merchandise, and it has added a fantastic selection of Fair Trade-certified gifts from around the rest of the globe.
Fair Trade is a socially just economic model that allows artisans to receive a living wage for their products and labor. Fair Trade promotes social and economic stability for some of the world’s poorest people, their families, and their communities. Every hand-crafted product has a real person and story behind it, and every purchase makes a difference.
Buying Fair Trade can truly help make the world a better place, which is why the Fair Trade and World Goods Store is such a perfect fit here at PLU. The bookstore hopes to expand the scope of its Fair Trade offerings by getting students more directly involved. In the future, PLU’s study away program participants can influence global supply chains by identifying new artisans for Fair Trade programs.
Since Garfield Book Company at PLU opened in July, the response to the Fair Trade and World Goods Store has been amazing. Customers from both on and off campus have eagerly embraced the wonderful variety of gifts, and we’ve already expanded our selection. We’ve heard lots of positive comments about the high quality and reasonable prices of the products available, and we’re sure that the store will be a hub for holiday gift-buying.
