Now that Day Light Savings Time has moved to March, April may be most
remembered for having the 2006 IRS tax filing deadline. Another,
perhaps equally important date is the April 2nd priority filing
deadline for the 2007-08 Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA). PLU students needing financial assistance for next year should
have filed their FAFSA in time to be delivered to PLU by this date.
Students successfully meeting this priority deadline will ensure two
things:
That their 2007-08 Financial Aid Awards will be processed and delivered to them in the first distribution of award notices AND
All aid programs still have sufficient funds to be awarded to all students with program eligibility.
If you have already file the FAFSA using estimated information, be sure
to return to the FAFSA website (www.fafsa.ed.gov) and correct the
estimates with actual figures after you’ve completed your tax returns.
The FAFSA is required in order to be considered for all Federal and
state student aid programs, as well as all need-based gift assistance
(scholarships and grants) offered by PLU.
If your student is not planning to enroll in summer
term, but needs a summer job, the state work study program might be the
answer. Students with demonstrated financial need (by filing the 2007-08 FAFSA)
can use the state work study program to find a summer job. State work
study employers are located throughout Washington state (and out of
state, as well). Students can work full time (40 hours per week, 19
hours per week if you are enrolled half time or more during summer
term). Terms of the full-time summer state work study program require
that we expect 40% of your gross earnings to be available to help pay
for educational expenses during the 2007-08 academic year. This is an
employer friendly program as well, as the employer receives a 65%
reimbursement of the student’s wages by the state work study program.
