PLU Summer Conference Season

SummerCamps

Conferences and Events Summer 2007

During the school year, the campus of Pacific Lutheran University is overflowing with students. Whether in a classroom, a residence halls, or strolling through Red Square, it is impossible not to encounter another person. As May comes to an end, however, most students pack up their rooms and say good-bye to each other, as they prepare to travel home, to camp, or abroad. With the exception of those deciding to work and study on campus for the summer, the heart of the university is gone. The job of Conferences and Event’s Summer Program is to fill the empty classrooms and lonely residence halls until students return for fall semester.

The summer begins with a variety of schools using our campus for graduation ceremonies. Throughout the season there are a variety of sports camps, including basketball, softball, volleyball, and soccer, which PLU hosts for junior high and high school age students. The monthly “berry festivals” bring the PLU and Parkland communities together to celebrate beautiful sunny days with food and entertainment. The campus is also used by many organizations-- such as Northwest Youth Leadership and Washington Business Week-- whose goals are to provide youth with valuable summer learning opportunities.

This summer is a little unusual, as our largest residence hall, Tingelstad, and the University Center are both under renovation. Because of this, the groups that we are hosting are smaller than normal.  The Summer Program, however, is still able to fulfill its many purposes.  While generating revenue, PLU is able to provide a safe place for fun and learning, which is in keeping with the campus' mission of preparing students for "lives of thoughtful inquiry, service and care."

Finally, there are programs that bring together the community surrounding PLU, which is one of the university’s latest missions as it constructs the Garfield Commons building that is scheduled to open at the end of the summer. Conferences and Event’s Summer Program truly represents the life of the university during what would be the lonely months for June through August.
