Student Employment

Student employees fill more than 2000 jobs on-campus each year. Students awarded work study as a part of their Financial Aid package can begin their job search as soon as they are awarded. On campus jobs are open to all students who are enrolled at least half time and the opportunities are competitive as no student is guaranteed a job.

The Federal or State Work Study award is based on financial need. Students who choose to use the award are paid as employees and their earnings are deducted from the awarded amount. Unlike other financial aid awards (i.e.-grants, scholarships), work study earnings are not automatically paid to the student’s tuition, but are paid to the student as a paycheck. Therefore, when a student does not work, the award is not paid to the student. One of the benefits of work study earnings is that the earnings are deducted from the family’s annual earnings on the FAFSA, so encourage your student to participate.

The State Work Study Program is designed to provide paraprofessional work experiences for students in fields related to their career goals. There are over 100 contracted employers that advertise and hire 300 plus PLU students each year. Students who have been awarded work study are eligible for either on-campus Federal Work Study or off campus State Work Study. Students are limited to working 19 hours per week during enrollment periods and can work up to 40 hours per week when classes are not in session. These limitations ensure students time needed for studying.

The Student Employment Office, located in Ramstad Hall, is available to help with questions regarding employment of students and we also provide job postings to students through the website at www.plu.edu/~stuemp. This website is updated daily and the goal is to have 100 percent of on-campus jobs being posted and managed through this system. State Work Study employers are also posting positions; however, students may still look for postings in Ramstad Hall.

Please encourage you student to call 253-535-7459 if he or she has questions.
