A summer message from
ASPLU President Carl Pierce & Vice-President Tamara Power-Drutis

Greetings Parents!

As finals end and students return home for the summer, ASPLU has kicked into gear to prepare for the 2007-2008 school year. Since taking office on April 1st, we have had the honor of serving the PLU student body and community through selecting new Directors, representing the student voice to the Board of Regents, and laying the groundwork for a promising year to come.

ASPLU’s Senate had the unique opportunity to pass a student led resolution signed by over 1,000 Lutes requesting the purchasing of Green Tags for PLU energy. This resolution came at a time when the administration, staff, faculty, and students all see eye-to-eye on the importance of sustainability. Leadership from all areas of campus will be trained this fall to model sustainable lifestyles, incoming first year students will have the opportunity to pledge themselves to lives of conservation and respect for our environment, and departments around the university are joining together to not only construct more environmentally friendly buildings, but create sustainable communities within them.

The current renovation of our University Center has enabled ASPLU to foster collaboration among the various PLU organizing bodies whose offices will soon be housed together. Throughout the summer we will work to develop an all encompassing Programming Board to eliminate past issues of over programming and conflicting event schedules as well as provide free advertising and support to campus clubs and orgs. This outreach to student led clubs is central to our goals for the coming year, as clubs have provided a niche for countless students who attend PLU.

During the summer session, ASPLU Executives will continue working with the staff and administration on issues of health, service projects, campus renovations, and student involvement. Within our organization, directors will focus on the expansion of each individual department; such as the evolving of Impact from a printing service into an advertising agency, the development of Outdoor Recreation’s local services and training opportunities, and the renovation of our own student hub: the CAVE.

What an exciting time for students to arrive or return to campus! The construction of a new Garfield Commons, the revitalization of our University Center, the renovations of Tinglestad Hall, and the grand opening of the CAVE will not only improve student access and ability on campus, it will also renew our vibrant and global community. ASPLU will strive throughout the summer to create a welcoming, challenging, and unique home for students returning in the fall.

Until then, enjoy the sun and have a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,
Carl Pierce
