Thank you for playing an important role in the work of your student. We know that student leadership and success is often a result of family support. We salute you!
I hope this summary of spring activities provides a glance of the wonderful work students are doing at PLU. Along with important work in the classroom, students participated in a remarkable number of activities and events.
A global health symposium early in the term opened with a keynote address by Stephen Lewis, former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. He outlined how the community can be more involved in finding global health solutions.
The symposium followed another remarkable January-term of study-away opportunities for our students when, for the second time, the PLU campus spanned the globe with more than 400 students in 27 classes studying in 19 countries on all seven continents – a first for any college or university in the nation.
In April Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver gave an Earth Day presentation on campus. She is renowned for her evocative and precise imagery, which brings nature into clear focus and transforms the everyday world into a place of magic and discovery.
Stephen Lewis and Mary Oliver are representative of the many provocative and inspiring individuals who have recently visited PLU. This term we have also been challenged to reach new levels of self-discovery by a conference examining men’s role in ending violence against women. We have been entertained by a vibrant and dynamic series of performances including PLU’s Dance 2008. And we enjoyed the Italian flavors presented by master chef Ken Arnone during campus Culinary Week.
In all it has been a busy and productive year on campus. The community now looks forward to the conclusion of the term and graduation for over 600 Lutes on May 25. For others it is on to a summer of work, relaxation or continued study followed by a return in the fall for the next step in their collegiate careers.
