Parents Council Responsibilities

The PLU Parents Council, sponsored by the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations, is comprised of parents of full-time undergraduate students at PLU. Their objective is to generate and maintain the goodwill and support of student families.

Here are a few of the programs we support:

ADMISSIONS REGIONAL RECEPTIONS—The Admissions Office hosts a number of Regional Receptions each year. These receptions are held across the country yielding large numbers of students. Parents Council members may be called upon to help host these events.

CONNECTION COUNCILS—
A Connection Council is a regional leadership team designed to keep alumni, parents and friends connected to Pacific Lutheran University. There are a growing number of these Connection Councils in geographical locations all around the world. We ask that if there is a Connection Council in your local area that you serve as a member of that Leadership Team. It sounds like this could be a lot of extra work---but really it is not. Instead, it is a platform for members of different PLU volunteer boards, living in the same geographic area, to combine their talent and resources to best serve both PLU and the community.

CONNECTION EVENTS—
The Alumni and Parent Relations Office, and other areas of the university, host various events for alumni, parents, friends and prospective students on campus and out in the community. If a Connection Event happens to occur in your area, we would likely ask for your assistance. Other regional events might include tailgate parties connected to an athletic contest or a reception following a touring music ensemble performance.

ORIENTATION PARENT HOSPITALITY TENT—On opening day of the fall new student orientation, the Parents Council, Alumni Board and the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations sponsor a hospitality tent---to assist in the welcoming of new families to PLU. Members of the Parents Council and Alumni Board (that are available) and Alumni and Parent Relations staff, spend time talking with parents about everything from Orientation activities and Family Weekend, to PLU in general. We make orientation fun for parents by providing buttons (Proud Parent, Grandparent, Family, Brother and Sister...just to name a few) and written material that helps them survive the orientation and move- in process.

PARENT PANELS—
Two or three times a year, several Parents Council members participate on a panel for the parents of first-year and/or perspective student. It is a formal time for informal questions.

PARENT TO PARENT CALLING—A program designed to welcome the parents of incoming students and answer any last minute questions. The current Parents Council members (often with a little help from past council members), divide up the list of first-year parents and give them a call during the months of August and September.

Goals & Objectives

Each year the Parents Council creates a set of goals and objectives for the year. These goals are intended to support the universities goals, to set a good example for all PLU parents, and to provide Council members the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the university and to the work of the Council. Examples of these goals and objectives include:

a) Make a gift to the annual fund or join Q Club (the size of the gift is not the most important aspect, but that you participate)
b) Submit the name of at least three prospective students on LuteRecruit cards (don’t worry--you’ll be amazed at how many “candidates” you’ll run into or think of once you try)
c) Special projects (i.e. this year we hosted several receptions for music events, helped to create a program for parents of nursing students, lobbied the state for more directional signs to PLU, etc)
