Parents prepare for spring
Spring Semester is a wonderful time on campus. Here are some thoughts for conversations with your student about the months ahead.
New Spring Parents:
Welcome to your student’s first semester at PLU. About 20 new freshmen
and about 80 new transfers start PLU each spring. If you have a student
just beginning their PLU career, please strongly encourage them to
attend the New Student Orientation on Tuesday, February 6th from 9am to 1:30pm.
They will learn very important information that is foundational to
success at PLU. In addition, questions about finances and financial aid
will be covered. Please review all of the information below, as well,
to learn more for your particular son or daughter.

Freshmen Parents:
As students begin their second semester, we hope they are even better
positioned to succeed at PLU now that they know more about what to expect and
the resources available on campus.
Important Spring dates for freshmen:
- Study Away Fair ~ March 6th, study away short term and semester offerings displayed.

Academic Advising Week ~ Starts April 9th, all freshmen must meet with their academic advisor prior to registration.

Sophomore Leap: Life after your First Year ~ April 10th, this session
helps freshmen plan their sophomore year and has a number of resources
and people available to help answer questions.
- Fall Housing Sign Up ~ April 11-13th, Sophomores are required to
live on campus. See the article in this newsletter for more details
about on campus housing.

Class Registration for Summer and Fall 2007 ~ Begins April 23rd.

Sophomore Parents:
As sophomores get ready for their junior
year, many are getting close to declaring a major (if they have not
already done so). Be sure your student meets with their academic
advisor to learn how to declare a major. Also, they may be thinking
about Study Away for their Junior Year or doing an internship off
campus.
Junior Parents:
As students start the spring semester of their
junior year, they tend to focus even more intently on plans after
graduation. Be sure they have recently completed a CAPP (Curriculum, Advising and Program Planning) report and met
with their Major Advisor to track graduation requirements. They are
also probably thinking about employment and careers, therefore spring
is an excellent time to visit the Career Development Office. If they
are interested in Internships for next year, the Internship/
Cooperative Education Office is also an important connection to make.
Important Dates for Sophomores and Juniors:

Study Away Fair ~ March 6th, a showcase of next year’s programs.

Career and Internship Fair ~ March 7 & 8th, gives interested
students an opportunity to meet local employers and think about
internships.
- Tables for 8: Career mentoring dinner ~ March 20, sponsored by the Student Alumni Association.
- Academic Advising Weeks ~ Start April 9th, when students meet with
their advisors, make sure they review their CAPP report that tracks
their completion of requirements for graduation.
- Fall Housing Sign Up ~ South Hall applications are being accepted
now until February 21st. Sign ups for other halls is April 11-13th.

Senior Parents:
If you are getting ready to celebrate a May graduate - congratulations!
All students planning on graduating in May needed to apply by December
1, 2006. If your student has not applied, have them contact the
Registrar’s Office immediately at registrar@plu.edu. You will receive graduation information in the upcoming months. The ceremony
will be at the Tacoma Dome on Sunday, May 27th at 2:30pm. Now is an excellent time for your student
to be visiting the Career Development Office for a personal appointment
and help with their résumé or interviewing techniques. In addition, the
Spring Career Fair is March 7th and 8th and will host a number of
employers on campus to meet with students.

Progress to Graduation: What is a CAPP Report?
Available on Banner Web, students can access their
CAPP (Curriculum, Advising and Program Planning) report in order to
monitor their progress as they complete core and general university
requirements. If students have questions about their CAPP report,
please encourage them to contact their advisor, the Academic Advising Office or the Registrar. Using the CAPP report, students and advisors have an important tool to assist them in effective academic planning.
