Faculty Affairs Committee Meeting

February 26, 2007

Present: A. Leon-Guerrero, S. Starkovich, R. Kaufman, W. Shore, R. Byrnes, M. Ellard-Ivey

Business:

1. Anna reported that Loren Anderson and Sheri Tonn would like FAC to give them a counterproposal for faculty salaries that costs less than our first proposal as soon as possible.  Steve presented a demand-side model for how we can catch up to a model competitor over a number of years.  The committee worked out a plan for meeting with Loren on March 7th, tying the salary proposal to a multi-year plan and to the Philosophy of Compensation, as well as linking it to the student satisfaction survey.

2.  Anna reported that she e-mailed Layne about the status of the endowed chairs survey but has had no response.

3.  The committee discussed EPC’s request to talk about the Common Time issue.  Anna said that she would contact Karen McConnell to see if this is part of a larger plan to change the schedule (including chapel as protected time), to suggest a 25-minute informal discussion at Faculty Assembly, and to find out where the charge is coming from.

4.  The committee looked ahead to meetings in April and May and decided to invite Greg Brewis to the April 16th or 30th meeting to talk about endowed chairs.

Meeting adjourned at 1:32 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Rona Kaufman

FAC Secretary

Next meeting: March 7th from 12:30 – 1:30 in the President’s Conference Room.
