Faculty Affairs Committee Meeting

April 16, 2007

Present: S. Starkovich, Ron Byrnes, R. Kaufman, W. Shore, A. Leon-Guerrero,  M. Ellard-Ivey

Business:

1. The committee reviewed the peer institution list.  We are waiting for data from the Provost’s office.

2.  The committee talked about how to present the salary data to the Board of Regents.  The committee talked about what to do with outliers—how to determine them and whether to include them.  The committee agreed to a two-part to-do list: 1) get data and 2) brainstorm what should be included in our implementation plan.  The committee agreed that we should include promotion bumps, market influence, faculty development, and fair and nondiscriminatory practice in our plan.  Ron said that we need to think about possible trade offs we’d be willing to make and suggested that we hold forums for faculty discussion.  Wendy suggested that we draw on existing documents—such as 2010 and the student/faculty research initiative—as we construct our implementation plan.

3.  Wendy presented salary data that was broken down by gender and race.  The committee talked about what, if anything, we need to do with this data.  The committee agreed to share Wendy’s data analysis with Sheri, Patricia, and Teri.

4.  The committee talked about endowed chairs, including Wayne Carp’s e-mail in which he offered his help.  The committee wondered if endowed chairs are part of our implementation plan?  Steve said that the big questions are if the administration really cares about endowed chairs and if this is a priority for faculty?  According to the survey, it is.

5.  The committee discussed the meeting with the Board of Regents on May 5th.  Steve agreed to be one of FAC’s representatives.  Ron said that he needed to check his calendar.

6.  The committee agreed to meet on Monday, April 23rd if we have data from the Provost’s Office.

Meeting adjourned at 2:27 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Rona Kaufman

FAC Secretary

Possible next meeting: April 23rd from 12:30 – 1:30 in the President’s Conference Room.
