Faculty Affairs Committee Meeting

April 23, 2007

Announcements:

1.  FAC will meet from noon until 4:00 on Wednesday, May 23rd in the Faculty House dining room.  Lunch will be provided by the Provost’s Office.

2.  The Provost’s Office has completed about 75% of the data needed for the peer institution list.

 

Business:

1. Wendy re-ran her analysis of her salaries based on gender using Marie Wutzke’s numbers.  She said the data told the same story, though: there’s no interaction of rank and sex, but sex is a factor.  Wendy agreed to write a summary sheet for Patricia Killen.  She also agreed to pull out School of Business salaries to see if that made a difference in the overall analysis.  Rona asked if there’s a relationship between gender and race.  Wendy said that the Ns for race are too small.

 

2.  Mary brought up the issue of years in rank at other schools and how they would figure into salary adjustments at PLU.  FAC agreed that it’s up to the Provost’s Office to decide based on the individual’s contract.

 

3.  Steve distributed the final summary of the salary recommendation.  Steve also said that at the AAUP meeting the previous Friday, he heard that contingent faculty are getting just the 2% COLA increase.  The committee talked about whether contingent faculty fall within our purview.  Anna said that she would ask Patricia what happened to full-time continuing faculty in terms of raises.  Steve also shared cost-of-living comparisons that he pulled from Sperling’s Best Places (November 2005).  The committee agreed that this data should be included in the peer list.

 

4.  The committee talked about the memo the Provost sent regarding graduate faculty and the inclusion of summer into nine-month academic contracts. 

 

5.  The committee agreed to devote the entire next meeting to he implementation plan.  Anna said she would sent the data in advance.  The committee also agreed to invite Patricia to the May 7th meeting.
