Faculty Affairs Committee Meeting Minutes

April 4, 2006

Present: A. Leon-Guerrero, R. Kaufman, J. Hasty, A. Batten

Regrets: R. McKenney, D. Harney

Business:

  1. FAC Minutes of March 7th and March 28th were unanimously approved.
  2. Committee Reports: Jennifer reported from the Benefits committee meeting. We will continue to have 3 plans next year and not move to only HSA plans. There will be focus group meetings about benefits for all employees in the fall.
  3. FAC Survey: So far, we have had a very good response rate.
  4. Memo regarding PLU 2010 and overall faculty welfare. The memo was sent out to the appropriate parties last Friday. So far, there has been no response.
  5. Independent Studies: The committee reviewed and discussed the additional data that was provided about independent studies and overall course loads. The committee also met with Dr. Tamara Williams, chair of Languages and Literatures, regarding the situation with independent studies in languages. FAC will also invite a representative from Music for their perspective on the issue, and seek more data. FAC concluded that the committee will not be able to provide a complete set of recommendations (as per our charge from EPC) for the May faculty meeting. We can say, however, that capstone courses should always be included in load.

Next Meeting: April 18, 1:45-3:30 pm in the President’s Conference Room. Paul Aslanian will visit with us for part of that meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Alicia Batten

Secretary
