Faculty Affairs Committee Meeting

October 18, 2006

Present: R. Byrnes, S. Starkovich, W. Shore, M. Ellard-Ivey, A. Leon-Guerrero, R. Kaufman

Business:

1.  The committee talked about the Faculty Assembly discussion of the independent study recommendations.  The committee agreed to revise the recommendations to include an estimate of how many independent studies there will be once all departments bring their capstones into load and to provide samples of statements of policies from departments who have them (such as Religion, Physical Education, Physics, and Psychology).  We will take the recommendations back to the Faculty Assembly in December and vote on them in as single motion.

2.  The committee continued to work on the Philosophy of Compensation, which we are now calling to the Philosophy of Faculty Compensation.  Wendy and Mary will take another stab at revising the preamble.  The revision will be distributed via e-mail for comments.  The plan is to have an informal 25-minute discussion of the Philosophy at the November Faculty Assembly meeting.

3.  The committee met with Sheri Tonn and continued the conversation begun on September 20th.  We reviewed Aslaian’s recommendations.  Sheri suggested that FAC make recommendations to the Provost about priorities.  She said that the administration would take the lead on the make up of the Budget Advisory Committee and on multi-year, long-range planning.

Meeting adjourned at 10:29 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Rona Kaufman

FAC Secretary

Next meeting: November 1st from 9:15 – 10:30 in UC 214
