Faculty Affairs Committee Minutes

April 18, 2005

Faculty committee members (Diane, Dane, Tamara, Greg, Kate) convened at 5:00 PM in the President’s Conference Room.

1.      FAC committee discussed Diane’s summary of the deans’ responses to FAC’s Independent Study survey.

FAC didn’t wish to extend credit hour loads for faculty, in light of the 2010 goals. If independent study courses required within degree programs were offered, faculty should be compensated as part of load or through some other form of compensation. Capstones should be in load or compensated. Teaching should be compensated the semester it is done (as opposed to the “banking model”). A consistent model for compensation within the university is needed. Two models for compensation are currently in place for supervising coursework beyond load; they are the internship program and supervision of graduate research.

2.      FAC considered Diane’s proposal for changing fall conference. She will meet with Laura Polcyn.

3.      The Provost will be invited to attend the next FAC meeting.

The committee adjourned at 6:10 PM

Faithfully,

Kate Grieshaber, Secretary
