Minutes were approved.
Teri Phillips, Interim HR Director, joined the meeting to review the revised hiring procedures document. Minor changes in language were recommended. Greg Johnson asked for clarification of the required background check. He was told that it involved a social security trace, education verification, and a criminal background check. He raised the concern that these checks were potentially invasive. Teri answered questions about the manner in which data was collected and handled and the process for an applicant who refused to allow a third-party check.
Tamara Williams reported that she had met with the Provost and encouraged FAC to be proactive on the issues of academic restructuring and salary.
Jim Pence has asked that FAC prepare a document detaining the guiding principles and philosophy for academic restructuring. Members of FAC discussed this request and decided that it did not fall within our purview. It was the consensus of the committee that the charge of the joint FAC/EPC committee had expired. In addition, committee members expressed frustration that no proposal had been forthcoming from the administration as had been promised last spring. The co-chairs were directed to contact Chuck Bergman, chair of the faculty, and Mark Jensen, former chair of Faculty Governance Committee, for a clarification on the status of joint committee charge. If our interpretation is correct, the co-chairs will draft a response to Pence articulating our position. Committee members will be asked to review the memo before it is sent to the Provost.
We were also informed that Chuck Bergman would like to form a committee to conduct a comprehensive salary review. This idea will be discussed at a future meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Diane M. Harney
