First Year Experience
This First-Year Experience Program workshop will be divided into three parts. First, we'll look over and talk about an FYEP-sponsored proposal for general education. Second, we will examine the complicated, time-consuming, and labor-intensive work of responding to student writing. Writing 101 faculty undoubtedly put more time and energy into responding to student writing at various stages than they do into any other component of the course, working to help students see their writing and make it better. Faculty who teach a 190 also have responsibilities to student writing, as literacy is one of the stated themes of the Inquiry Seminars. We'll spend the bulk of our workshop looking at student writing and hearing from experienced 101 and 190 faculty about the complicated pedagogical issues involved in responding to student writing. How do we respond in ways that students can hear? How do we respond differently to different stages of writing? What are the different modes in which we can respond? How do we ensure that students have read, have considered, and have tried to apply our feedback to subsequent writing acts? Do we respond differently to student writing in a 190 than we do in a 101? Do we have different responsibilities in a 190 than we do in a 101? If so, are the differences quantitative or qualitative? Finally, we'll take some time to workshop our syllabi, getting us reading for the first day of class. Please, then, bring a copy of your 101 or 190 syllabus and/or assignment draft. Coffee, breakfast snacks, and lunch will be provided. All faculty are invited to attend. All faculty teaching a FYEP course are particularly encouraged to attend.
