February 11, 2008 ASPLU Public Forum

» Erin McKenna & John Grey spoke about the new PLU General Education Requirements.

» Erin McGinnis Spoke about Dining Services.

» Senate Bill 13: Major Spring Concert at PLU. This bill would allocate $70,000 to be spent on bringing a big name artist to perform for PLU students and surrounding community. Sent to Committee; Student Outreach & Guiding Documents

The Month of January 2008

ASPLU broke out into three distinct groups to work on mini projects. Senators worked on revitalizing the Cave, ASPLU Elections, & coming up with a more productive ASPLU meeting format. The result of which produced a permanent floor plan as well as new business plan for the Cave, and ASPLU will now be holding public forums every month to reach out to the student body.

November 19, 2007

At this meeting there was a special presentation from Melanie Cunningham about Multi-Cultural Recruitment at PLU. John De Mars gave a presentation in regards to the ASPLU budget.

November 5, 2007  

Steve Titus, Vice President of Development and University Relations Development gave a presentation explaining the new PLU $150 million campaign.

Lauren Buchholz gave a presentation on effective promotions. Kelsey Dawson gave a presentation explaining her role within ASPLU as the Public Relations Director.

At this meeting the Senate & Dr. Laura Majovski discussed the issues surrounding the current meal plans. Director Greene brought cupcakes for September Birthdays and passed out awards to those who did not receive theirs on August 31, 2007.

At this meeting Director Greene passed out awards to ASPLU Senators and Directors.

April 10, 2007


At this meeting the Senate received reports from President Carl Pierce in regards to the hiring of new directors. Vice President Tamara Power-Drutis reported on the renovations going on in the cave and took suggestions for new paint colors. John McClimans reported on the off-campus caucus, Clubs & Orgs “Club of the Month” bill and the creation of the “52 things to do in the Spring” as well as discussed budget review.

There was a presentation from Dr. Laura Majovski in regards to the clarification/revision of the Publicity and Solicitation policy. Primarily what was discussed was the addition of 1-2 sentences clarifying that editorial content is protected. ASPLU referred Dr. Majovski to the Student Media Board and requested a reappearance when the new sentences are in a more finalized stage, so that ASPLU can have an opportunity to review them to ensure they reflect the desires of the student body, as were discussed last November.

» Senate Bill (SB) 23: ASPLU Election Packet  Passed

       This bill was about accepting the 2007-2008 Senate Election Packet, which contains all the information that is needed to run for an elected ASPLU position. This information includes deadlines and rules for the upcoming 2007-2008 campaign season.

» SB 24: Relay For Life  Sent to Committee

       This bill would supply funds for the Relay for Life events. Money would be spent Grocery Bingo, art projects and programs.

Other Important Announcements:

» All students are encouraged to purchase their tickets and attend The President of the United States Concert. The better the turnout, the better opportunity of having more awesome artists attend campus.

» There is a Kayaking trip scheduled with Outdoor Rec. for April 21, 2007, all are encouraged to participate.

April 3, 2007

This was the very first meeting with the newly elected President and Vice President performing their newly elected role. There were the introduction of the new ASPLU directors, and three presentations. The first presentation was about the upcoming elections and election packet. The second presentation was from GREAN about making PLU more sustainable and the possible creation of a fund. The cost of which would be passed on to the students. The details of which are still all being worked out and nothing has been made official as more discussion is needed. Senator Relfe, gave the third presentation to the senate about the officers creating WebPages similar to this one, so that ASPLU can create a more unified form of open communication to constituents.

March 13, 2007

There was a lot to cover at this meeting. There were the announcements of the new PLU Student Body President and Vice President, discussion of 9 Senate Bills, and awards were presented and goodbyes were given.


This meeting marked the end of reign for President Anne Spilman and Vice President Shelley Johnson. They will be replaced by Carl Pierce (President) and Tamara Power-Drutis (Vice President). Both Spillman and Johnson said their goodbyes to the Senators and Directors and told the Senate to remember their commitment to their constituency. Both Spillman and Johnson were presented with parting gifts, which included gift cards. Carly Steen and John McClimans both received awards for their outstanding efforts and work for the 2006-2007 year.

 Senate Bill (SB) 14
Act relating to the appropriation of Senate Special Project Funds for the expenses of moving the Lute Lounge Pool Tables. Passed

        The pool tables no longer fit in the UC, so they will be moved     to the residence halls. Hinderlie & Hong halls will each receive     $150.00 to subsidize the cost of moving.

» SB 15: Act relating to the ASPLU Bylaws as required due to ASPLU structural changes. Passed

         The number of ASPLU Senators will increase by 5, a        summer executive position will be created, and the Public Relations director will now be an executive director.

» SB 16: Act relating to the appropriation of ASPLU Senate Special Project Funds for the Beehive Design Collective Tour. Passed

        The Beehive Collective is a group of volunteer artists committed to increasing awareness about global issues of human rights. The artists do extensive field research about the effects of globalization, focusing on interviews with people affected by globalization and then create collaborative, hand-illustrated tapestries in reaction to the personal stories related to them in their travels. The focus of the Beehive Collective aligns with ASPLU’s goal to increase global awareness on campus and presents information in a unique and creative way and cost of bringing the collective is more than GREAN or Global Awareness has to give. $800 will be given to aid in bringing the Beehive Collective to campus.

» SB 17: Act relating to the appropriation of Senate Special Project Funds for the expenses spent on the all campus Harry Potter Party. Passed

       $500 was released to aid in the expenses of the Harry Potter Party (Second Annual Extravaganza).

» SB 18: Act relating to the expenditure of Program funds for Spring Formal 2007. Passed

         A budget was presented and included with this bill. The 2007 Spring Formal has a projected cost of $9,000 with a projected return of $10,500, ($1,500 projected profit).

» SB 19: Act relating to the 2007 Spring Concert. Passed

         After doing a survey of student body concert interests, the entertainment committee contracted the Presidents of the United States of America. The projected cost of a concert of this caliber is $34,400. The projected gross return is $34,400. Any profit made will go to benefit the artists, the student body benefits from the concert, and ASPLU is supposed to break even. 

» SB 20: Act relating to the stipends of the ASPLU President and Vice President. Passed

         The stipends for the 2007-2008 ASPLU President and Vice-President will be increased to $690.00 each. A 4% increase due to the rising cost of living.

» SB 21: Act relating to the appropriation of Senate Special Project Funds for the expenses spent on the Meal Plan Forums. Passed

         The Senate, along with Dining Services, helped sponsor the Meal Plan Forums, which took place in October 2006. The Feedback that was obtained from the forums helped Dining Services plan how they will approach meal plans for the 2007-2008 year as well as the UC renovations. $250 was released to aid in the expenses of the forums.

  » SB 22: Act relating to the appropriation of Senate Special Project Funds for the expenses for Spring Senate One-on Ones. Passed

        Senates One-on-Ones are an opportunity for the Executive Caucus Leader to privately talk with senators. Feedback from the one-on-ones is useful in planning the rest of the semester, along with creating ways to address problems in the future. The Senate released $600 to be spent on food, drinks and other necessary supplies.
