RECYCLING AND DUMPSTERS

PLU continues to be committed to sustainability on-campus. PLU’s Environmental Services department has arranged for there to be various methods available for items to be disposed of or properly recycled.

Bins will be available in the Residence Hall lobbies for the following items:

  • Reusable Clothing (will be given to charity)
  • Household Items (will be given to charity)
  • Books (will be given to charity)
  • Toiletries (will be given to charity)
  • Non-Perishable Food (will be given to charity)
  • Phone Books (will be recycled)
  • Dining Services Items (will be returned to Dining Services)

There will also be a large dumpster located outside of Tingelstad, Foss, Pflueger, South Hall, Hong/Ordal/ Stuen/, and Hinderlie/Kreidler. These dumpsters are for items that need to be disposed of, but don’t belong in any of the bins listed above or are too big for the standard outside trash cans.

The following items require a specific action to be taken instead of just placing items in the dumpster, or recycling them. Please read through each area to know how to properly dispose of them:

Carpet                                                                          Unneeded carpet should be placed next to the outside dumpsters. PLU will recycle any unneeded carpet.

Refrigerators, Televisions, and Computers
These items are considered as hazardous, and can’t be recycled or thrown out.  If students need to dispose of these or other electronic items, they should contact Environmental Services at ext. 7385 to arrange for a pick-up.  There is will be a environmental disposal charge that will be billed to your student account.  Environmental Services will let you know at the time of pick-up, how much that charge will be..

Homemade Loft Pieces
Unneeded homemade loft pieces will be recycled and can be disposed on on-campus. Students should put them next to the outside dumpsters. Students are asked to remove as much metal hardware from the wood pieces, and dispose of them in the dumpster.

  • Get an “Express Check-Out Envelope” from the main lobby.
    • Follow the instructions on the envelope.
  • Put all Residence Hall keys (room and mail) in the envelope.
  • Sign and date it.
  • Seal the envelope and slide it under the door in the following location:
    • Kreidler Hall … Mailroom (located west of the Front Desk).
    • South Hall … Staff Office (located north of the Front Desk).
After students leave, hall staff will go into the room and assess it for cleanliness, for damages to room and furniture, to make sure all personal items have been removed, and that all issued University furnishings are in the room.

Students will be billed for any damages or missing items. Fines and charges will be billed to the student’s account.
