Whether you and your future roommate are already friends, simply acquaintances or total strangers, we think you’ll agree your roommate relationship(s) will be remembered for a lifetime.  Sharing Your Home includes tips and resources to help you get your roommate relationship(s) off to a strong and healthy start.

Your Rights as a Resident

Roommates have some inherent rights that are to be respected at all times. These rights extend beyond the walls of the room and into the residence hall, helping to foster a healthy community for everyone. A respectful community begins with respecting one’s own roommate.

The following are the rights of each and every resident:
  • The right to read, study and sleep fee from undue interference.
  • The right to expect reasonable cooperation in the use of shared space and items (bathrooms, living areas, appliances, telephones, etc.).
  • The right to personal privacy, including the use of one’s belongings.
  • The right to live in a clean and orderly room.
  • The right to free access to the room and facilities without pressure from roommate(s).
  • The right to expect any and all grievances will be discussed in an atmosphere of openness and mutual respect. This includes the right to involve a residence hall staff member in the discussion if desired.
  • The right to be treated with consideration and thoughtfulness.
  • The right to be free from intimidation and physical and/or emotional harm.
  • The right to host guest who respect the rights of the community members.
  • The right to expect that a roommate will not violate any PLU policy in the room subjecting other to possible reprimand/consequences.

Need Assistance?

Sharing Your Home is a great guide for your roommate relationship(s), but is not the only resource available to you.  The residence hall staff in your building is trained to create a living environment that is clean, safe, fun respect and conducive to the studying needed to be successful academically.
