Maintaining a fire-safe work environment is
critical to preserving research work, business records and facilities,
as well as the personal safety of every member of our community.
Do fires happen at PLU?
Yes. However, we have been fortunate not to have a fatal fire or one that has destroyed an entire building.
Recently, we had a fire start from a malfunctioning piece of
electrical equipment. The fire displaced classes and offices for a
period of time while the area was cleaned and rebuilt. The fire
department has also responded to smoke from unknown sources. When
investigated, we have found pinched or damaged electrical cords still
in use. A number of years ago, we even had a fire in a residence hall.
Fortunately, it was very localized and no one was injured.
Our engineers have responded to reports of smoke to find a mug
warmer turned on and stashed in someone's desk drawer. According to
Cleaning Services personnel, it is relatively common to find coffee
pots left turned on. All of these experiences alert us to the
possibility of a devastating fire and and appreciation that we all have
never had an injured person from a fire on campus. It also helps to
remember how to prevent fires.
Prevent Fires
Place materials at least 18 inches away from heat sources; 36 inches for portable space heaters.
Turn off or unplug electrical appliances, such as coffee makers, at the end of the day.
Do not overload the electrical system by plugging too many items into an outlet.
Do not use candles or incense in PLU facilities.
Prepare for Fires
Learn to use a fire extinguisher.
Keep exit corridors and stairs free of clutter.
Keep fire doors closed.
Participate in fire drills.
Review the evacuation routes posted in each building.
Review the Emergency Procedures Handbook.
Respond to Fire
Get out of the building and evacuate to the appropriate Emergency Assembly Point.
