Severtson/Forest Foundation Student & Faculty Research Fellowship

The Severtson/Forest Foundation Student & Faculty Research Fellowship program came into being in 2000 due to the efforts of PLU's President Loren Anderson and Frank Underwood of Grantmakers Consultants, Inc. The Division of Social Sciences began preparation in December 2000 to set in place the awarding of fellowships for the 2001-2002 school year. The grant stipulated that each fellowship awarded the first year and in succeeding years would be in the form of a stipend of $2,000 and up to $500 for travel or other expenses. Faculty mentors were guaranteed additional travel/expense funds by the Provost's Office.

Application forms for students and faculty were developed and distributed to interested parties within the division. The first year four fellowships were awarded. For the 2002-2003 year, eight fellowships were awarded. A year-end presentation by all participants will become an integral part of the division's spring open house program.

The application process for future years will begin in February of the year preceding the award year. Please check with a division faculty member for more details.

Other student awards:

  • Faculty Merit Award
  • Undergraduate Fellowship
  • Anthony Eyring Liberal Arts Scholarship

Please reference the individual department sites for the availability of more awards/scholarships.

Raphael Lemkin Essay Competition

Dedicated to the man who named "the crime with no name".

Through the efforts of Alumnus & Board of Regents member Donald R. Morken and a colleague, Mr. Bruce Littman, PLU sponsors scholarships in honor of Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term "genocide" and labored for passage of the United Nations genocide convention which outlaws destruction of races and groups. The Raphael Lemkin Trust, funded by Mr. Irving Young of Haifa, Israel, helps to support the prizes and scholarships. Currently offered at Yale Law School, Duke University Law School, Hamilton College, and others, the prizes serve to inspire young people to reflect upon the issue of genocide and to inform them about Raphael Lemkin.

Each year PLU invites currently registered students to write an essay on the topic of genocide. A panel of faculty members judge each essay. First and second place monetary awards are given to the essayists who best demonstrate understanding of the issue of genocide in today's society. A biographical sketch on Raphael Lemkin is available to assist the research process.

The annual essay contest is announced through various means starting in the fall semester with a deadline for submission on or around March 1. Entrants are invited to attend an April awards ceremony.

Additional information and instructions may be obtained from the Office of the Dean, Xavier 152.
