Summer Events

Summer at PLU offers countless activities and events for the whole family. From outdoor concerts and sport camps to educational workshops and conferences, everyone is sure to find many stimulating opportunities to quench their summertime needs.

Fruit Festivals
Always a favorite, PLU's fruit festivals are held once a month in Red Square. Families, faculty, and friends enjoy fresh fruit, ice cream, and lively entertainment. The Offices of Summer Sessions, Conferences & Events, and Food Services are pleased to co-sponsor the following three festivals this summer that celebrate harvests in several varieties. All are welcome to each festival, and food is free with a valid PLU LuteCard (cost is $2.50 without card).

Strawberry Festival
Date: Wednesday, June 16; 11:30am - 1:00pm
Entertainment: Gene Cordova, Ventriloquist, and the Gentlemen Jugglers.
Food: Strawberries and ice cream

Join Gene Cordova, hilarious ventriloquism, and a magic and comedy act! Whether it's Bongo (Gene's primate pal), Filbert the self-conscious duck, or a drawing that magically comes to life and speaks, you can count on laughs galore and total amazement at Gene's ventriloquist skills. Gene's laid-back style of magic is guaranteed to tickle the funny bone. Captivating audiences for two decades, the Gentleman Jugglers are one of the best variety acts performing today. John and Robert started juggling together at the age of eleven. Within four years they won the silver medal for team juggling at the International Jugglers Championship in Las Vegas. Their synchronized swimming routine and ballerina impersonation have audiences dissolving in fits of laughter.

Raspberry Festival
Date: Wednesday, July 14; 11:30am - 1:00pm
Entertainment: The Toucans Steel Drum Band
Food: Raspberries, scones, and whipped cream

The Toucans Steel Drum Band has been thrilling audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest for over thirteen years. This dynamic 4-piece group features all-acoustic steel drums along with a drumset. The band plays Caribbean calypso music, Jamaican reggae, popular tunes, favorites, and standards as well.

Peach Festival
Date: Wednesday, August 11; 11:30am - 1:00pm
Entertainment: Lance Buller & The Monarchs
Food: Peach crisp and whipped cream

Formed in 1985 by trumpet powerhouse Lance Buller, The Monarchs are a unique combination of journeyed jazzmen and young lions. Always striving for the tightness and flow of a show, they start and end with the spontaneity and drive of a jam session. They quickly became a group much in demand at jazz clubs and festivals. Performing all the standards plus original compositions, The Monarchs carry on the tradition of New Orleans with a flair that is jazz today. The latest jewels in their crown include a standing-room performance at the famed Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
