and Activity Camps
Open enrollment camps are planned for basketball, soccer,
softball, wrestling, volleyball, and football. Northwest Youth
Leadership, South Sound Jazz Camp, Jostens Yearbook University
and Professional Kicking Services Camps are also planned.

The
School of Education
at Pacific Lutheran University announces Project
LeaD - a bold initiative that will enable us to
meet the audacious goal of ensuring that every student has
the caring and competent teachers he or she deserves. Pacific
Lutheran University has a wonderful tradition of preparing
excellent teachers. Our summer programs build upon this tradition
by offering:

Master Degree Program for experienced educators.

CONTINUING
EDUCATION:
PLU
offers nine graduate-level Institutes for beginning
or experienced AP teachers in the summer of 2003. |

include American Government, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry,
English Literature, English Language Composition,
English Vertical Teams, Pyschology and U.S. History.
The fee of $700 includes tuition for two semester
hours of graduate level credit and many teaching materials.

CONTINUING
EDUCATION:
Pacific Lutheran University offers an exciting array of continuing
education options for educators that allow teachers to earn
clock hours while they develop as professionals. Continuing
education opportunities during the summer of 2002 include:
Workshops and seminars addressing topics such as "Teaching
with Multiple Intelligences," "Empowering Educators,"
and "Cross Curriculum Teaching." For information

Summer at PLU offers countless activities and events for the
whole family. From outdoor concerts and sport camps to educational
workshops and conferences, everyone is sure to find many stimulating
opportunities to quench their summertime needs.
Fruit
Festivals
Always
a favorite, PLU's fruit festivals are held once a month in
Red Square. Families, faculty, and friends enjoy fresh fruit,
ice cream, and lively entertainment. The Offices of Summer
Sessions, Conferences & Events, and Food Services are
pleased to co-sponsor the following three festivals this summer
that celebrate harvests in several varieties. All are welcome
to each festival, and food is free with a valid PLU LuteCard
(cost is $2.50 without card).

Strawberry
Festival
Date: Wednesday, June 16; 11:30am - 1:00pm
Entertainment: Gene Cordova, Ventriloquist,
and the Gentlemen Jugglers.
Food: Strawberries and ice cream
Join
Gene Cordova, hilarious ventriloquism, and
a magic and comedy act! Whether it's Bongo
(Gene's primate pal), Filbert the self-conscious
duck, or a drawing that magically comes to
life and speaks, you can count on laughs
galore and total amazement at Gene's ventriloquist
skills. Gene's laid-back style of magic is
guaranteed to tickle the funny bone. Captivating
audiences for two decades, the Gentleman Jugglers
are one of the best variety acts performing
today. John and Robert started juggling together
at the age of eleven. Within four years they
won the silver medal for team juggling at
the International Jugglers Championship in
Las Vegas. Their synchronized swimming routine
and ballerina impersonation have audiences
dissolving in fits of laughter.

Festival

Entertainment: The Toucans Steel Drum Band
Food: Raspberries, scones, and whipped cream
The Toucans Steel Drum Band has been
thrilling audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest
for over thirteen years. This dynamic 4-piece
group features all-acoustic steel drums along
with a drumset. The band plays Caribbean calypso
music, Jamaican reggae, popular tunes, favorites,
and standards as well.

Peach
Festival
Date: Wednesday, August 11; 11:30am - 1:00pm
Entertainment: Lance Buller & The Monarchs
Food: Peach crisp and whipped cream
Formed
in 1985 by trumpet powerhouse Lance Buller,
The Monarchs are a unique combination
of journeyed jazzmen and young lions. Always
striving for the tightness and flow of a show,
they start and end with the spontaneity and
drive of a jam session. They quickly became
a group much in demand at jazz clubs and festivals.
Performing all the standards plus original compositions,
The Monarchs carry on the tradition of
New Orleans with a flair that is jazz today.
The latest jewels in their crown include a standing-room
performance at the famed Kennedy Center in Washington,
D.C.

Concerts
Summer is the perfect time for concerts and other performances
outside on Red Square or in the Mary Baker Russell (MBR)
Amphitheater. Don't miss the JAZZ UNDER THE STARS,
casual Thursday evening gatherings in the MBR amphitheater.

PLU is home to one of National Public Radio's top stations,
KPLU 88.5 NPR News & All that Jazz. Recognized for its

A Northwest classic, this summer KPLU will again present the
Jazz and Blues Cruise Series on Sunday mornings in Seattle.
These cruises bring together the best of the Northwest in
one wonderful event: great music, great Sunday morning brunch,
great views, and a great price. All proceeds benefit the station.

Conferences at PLU
2004 will be another busy summer of conferences at PLU. Among

PLU Summer Institute of Theology, J. Robinson's Intensive
Wrestling Camp, PLU South Sound Jazz Camp, and the NW Boychoir's

PLU
offers a broad variety of recreational opportunities for
summer students. Exceptional facilities are available for
most popular sports and pastimes! Free use of the Names
Fitness Center, Olson Auditorium and the Swimming Pool is
available by presenting your student ID card (available
from the Campus Concierge located in the University Center).
Reservation of racquetball/squash courts is made by calling
(253) 535-7365. Schedules for use of all recreational facilities
are available in the School of Physical Education office
in Olson Auditorium.
Names
Fitness Center contains the latest in weight training
and other conditioning/fitness equipment, including an indoor

Swimming
Pool offers a swimming area, diving pool, sunbathing area,
locker and dressing rooms. Swim lessons are available for

Olson
Auditorium is a multipurpose facility featuring a hardwood
gymnasium floor and an Astroturf fieldhouse. Activities include
basketball, volleyball, badminton, handball, racquetball,

University
Golf Course is a 2,770 yard, nine-hole, par 35 layout
with a reduced fee schedule for students. Call (253) 535-7393

Off-Campus
Recreation
Numerous recreational opportunities exist close to the
campus. Spanaway Park, located by Lake Spanaway, two miles
south of campus, features canoe, rowboat and paddle boat rentals
in addition to swimming, horseshoes, picnic facilities, golf
and fishing. The public Spanaway Golf Course is a beautiful
championship course with well-kept fairways, greens and traps.
Sprinker Recreation Center, also located two miles south of
campus, has excellent facilities for tennis, track and field,
softball, baseball, basketball, broom hockey, racquetball,
and an ice skating arena. Sprinker also has a sun-bathing
area, and locker and dressing rooms. For program days and
